I Can Draw Animals (Playtime Series)
Published in Library Binding by Edu Dev (February, 1998)
Author: Ray Gibson
Average review score:

wonderful for beginning drawers -even older children
This book is terrific, non-intimidating and easy to follow. It sparks creativity by giving further ideas to draw for each illustration. Even the 5th graders at the school I teach art at love this book.

Great book for children and adults
I am currently buying this book for my nephew as a stocking stuffer. I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter 3 years ago, but I have to tell you that my whole family still uses it. Great illustrations, not to mention easy to follow directions! Everytime my daughter has a poster project that entails drawing a animal we pull this book off the shelf. I recommend this book to anyone.

Lots of fun!
This is a very simple step by step drawing book. It uses shapes and lines to create some impressive looking animals. The book uses colors that are eye catching and appealing to children. Both my 5 year old daughter and I learned to draw some great looking animals. This book and others in the series helped a hopeless artist survive kindergarten homework that required drawing.

Josh Gibson

Author: William Brashler
Average review score:

Best book on baseball I've ever read
This is among the very best books I have ever read. Easily the best biography and the best book on baseball (of which I have read a lot). Brashler's account of Gibson's life and the Negro Leagues engrosses you like a great novel. I could not recommend it more highly.

JOSH GIBSON: SUPERSTAR AND HUMAN
I HIGHLY RECOMMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO ENJOYS BASEBALL AND THE HISTORY OF THE GREAT PLAYERS IN THE NEGRO LEAGUES. TOO BAD STATS WEREN'T CLOSELY KEPT FROM THAT TIME PERIOD, FOR THE NUMBERS THAT JOSH PUT UP ARE PROBABLY TRULY BREATH TAKING. HE WAS THE BABE RUTH, JIMMIE FOXX, AND MARK MCGWIRE OF 1930'S AND 40'S. THE BOOK DOES A GOOD JOB OF SHOWING US JOSH'S TRIUMPHS AND HIS DARK SIDE. HE WAS WITH FAULTS, BUT THAT MADE HIM EVEN MORE INTERESTING. THIS BOOK ALSO TREATS US TO SOME INTERVIEWS WITH MANY OTHER GREAT PLAYERS OF THAT ERA AND AN IN DEPTH HISTORY OF THE NEGRO LEAGUES. WELL WORTH READING ABOUT A GREAT PIECE OF BASEBALL HISTORY.

The REAL home run-king
I love baseball. I thought I knew all there was to know about Josh Gibson, his 926 homers, his never getting to the majors, or his friendship with Satchel Paige. Even his tragic death at a young age. This man needed to be in the majors, but it never happened. He died only 3 months before Jackie Robinson got in. This book chronicles the life of this man, 220 pound all muscle homer hitter. He was called the "black babe ruth". After reading this book they should call Babe Ruth the White Josh Gibson. It is truly sad how he never got in to the show. I can't tell you how sad it is though, you have to experience him for yourself. If you are at all interesed in baseball, then you should know about the negro leagues and the great players they beheld.

The Magic City

Nesbit's best
More than a quarter of a century ago my sisters and I were captivated by E. Nesbit, and particularly by THE MAGIC CITY. Long unavailable (I have scoured used book shops and the Net for copies for various children) it is great to have it easily available once more. I am happy to report that my own daughter was as taken with it as her aunts and I a generation earlier, and like us she at once began building magic cities of her own. I realize that I risk the wrath of Potterites everywhere, but I suspect that in a hundred years children and their parents will still be enjoying The Magic City while Harry is at most the subject of earnest dissertations on odd trends in the early 21st century. If you have a spark of imagination and an eager child handy, grab this book.

If you love Harry Potter, try this!
Years before I even heard of Harry Potter, my mother picked up the 1910 Macmillan hardcover version of this book at a garage sale for a mere fifty cents. (Imagine, a turn-of-the-century copy of a great book for fifty cents!) At first I was put off by its volume (333 pages with illustrations) but I managed to lap up every last word of it...about seven times, I think.

Philip Haldane, our hero, and his half-sister Helen are orphans. Helen has been Philip's sister, teacher and playmate for what seemed like all his life, and there wasn't a shadow of a doubt in his mind that this would go on for ever; he wanted it to. But the unimaginable happens -- Helen marries and goes honeymooning around Europe, leaving Philip at his new residence, friendless and bitter. But soon his new, seemingly dreary life is changed by his embarking on an exciting adventure, so splendid and picturesque that he never would have dreamed that he had built it with his own hands. You see, Philip had always played building games, and he built not with plain old building blocks but with...well, everything -- everything from ink-wells to bronze Egyptian figurines! And it was while he was in the depths of his misery and pining harder than ever to see his sister again that he, the Creator, discovered it -- his Magic City -- and its delightful secrets.

Now, to look at it from a Harry Potter fan's viewpoint. I shouldn't be giving any clues, you really should have read this book at least once before comparing it with HP, but I'll just say...Philip is of course the Harry Potter of this book, but he is also the Ron Weasley because of his initial malice towards his new stepsister, Lucy -- the Hermoine Granger of this book. The Grey Nurse is the Snape/Malfoy/Voldermort figure of this book. The Great Sloth is rather like Scabbers, and Polly is somewhat Hedwig-like. And Mr. Noah is almost EXACTLY like Professor Dumbledore; if you look at the part of the book when he goes to visit the prison, you'll know what I mean :)

If that still doesn't grab the average Potter fan's attention, how about this: J.K. Rowling favours E. Nesbit as one of her must-reads! Enjoy...

The Book I Spent Ten Years Looking For...
Edith Nesbit is one of the most imaginitive children's writers around - and she's been around for a hundred years!

This is her best book. A boy dreams and finds himself in an equally real world, made up of the pretend cities he's made while awake.

I read The Magic City back in 1989 and spent years searching in second hand books stores for my own copy until I tracked it down on amazon.com!

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: A Survival Guide
Published in Paperback by New Harbinger Pubns (February, 2000)
Author: Pamela Reed Gibson Ph.D.
Average review score:

Excellent Book!
This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it. It is great for people who are new to the MCS/Chemical Sensitivity world. It also takes you allot further. There are so many things in this book that others do not cover. There is also a nice resource listing of where to buy special products just for the Chemically Sensitive individual, I found that very useful as well. I would say if your new to MCS then this is the book for you. It is the most comprehensive, straight forward easy to read version. I would start here and then move on to others by Bonnye L. Matthews Or William Rea.

One of the best books on MCS
My wife suffers from MCS. As such, I have read most of the books available concerning MCS. Most books are from a medical professional covering a particular medical theory or treatment plan for MCS. What makes this book different is that it really explains the impact of MCS on people's lives. It dispells the myths surrounding the various treatments. The book is based upon surveys and interviews with hundreds of MCS patients. As such, the advice is based upon their experiences. When discussing treatments, statistics are provided on how many people were helped, how many harmed, how many uncertain.

This books is great for those new to MCS, those who have been around a long time, those who are patients, those who know someone with MCS.

I would recommend this book be added to anyone's library. This is not the only excellent book on MCS ... it is now simply the first book I recommend that people read.

An excellent guide for those just learning about MCS
As someone who has been learning about MCS since 1994, I found this book to be an excellent overview of this frustrating, frightening and confusing malady. It is very easy to just open it and start reading at any point in the book, without losing context of the overall message. The author is very thorough in her scope, and presents her message in very easy to understand terms.

Of particular interest is the time the author spends on the emotional aspect of this illness. Unlike other psychologists, Dr. Gibson does NOT try to imply that MCS is not a physical but rather a psychological illness. Instead she includes an entire chapter for patients to share with their therapist, where she explains how MCS does NOT fit the somatization model that mainstream psychology claims as the cause of MCS symptoms. This is a refreshing approach from the psychology profession, as one of the biggest roadblocks that MCS patients must fight is the claim that "its all in your head."

I highly recommend this book to anybody who has just recently been diagnosed with MCS, or suspects they may have an environmentally related illness. I also feel that it is an excellent book for MCS patients to share with their families and friends who are struggling to understand what is going on with their loved one.

The New Farmers' Market : Farm-Fresh Ideas for Producers, Managers & Communities
Published in Paperback by New World Publishing (February, 2001)
Authors: Vance Corum, Marcie Rosenzweig, and Eric Gibson
Average review score:

The best of all the market books I've read!
The cover is kind of "blah" but there's lots and lots of really god solid information inside. In fact, so far every question I've had has been addressed. A lot of the other books seem big on theory ("You must be organized!") but this book has the nuts and bolts. In fact, it's the only one that sits on my desk. The others are nicely preserved on my bookshelf.

What to do when you participate or start a farmers' market?
The answer is read this book! You don't have to be a student of marketing or have a masters degree to become an excellent marketer of your farm products. "The New Farmers' Market" is a great way to get your ideas rolling for you as a farmers' market manager or even a vendor. Information is presented in a clear, almost common sense way. As a marketing specialist for a government agency, this is a great asset to my library of resources for my clients.

The New Farmers' Market is the one book you need. Put it all together and you've got a complete guide to farmers' markets, more in-depth and practical than any college course I know of, and highly readable."
-Editor Jean English, for "The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener"

"I've recouped the cost of the book several times over already and it's only our second market!"
-Joan Vibert, Windwalker Farm, Ottawa, KS

"The New Farmers' Market is the most comprehensive, pertinent source of information out there on selling at farmers markets. The breadth of the topics, issues covered, real-life information for all-size farmers and markets, and in-depth presentation of material will be invaluable for the farmers' market industry."

The book includes stories from vendors, managers and other experts from around the country who share their experiences on what is required to be successful. In reviewing the publication, I could find very little detail that was omitted... After 20+ years of experience working with farmers' markets, it is great to see a detailed summary of how markets really work."
-Reviewed by Monika Roth, Extension Educator, Ithaca, NY, (Book Review for "County Agent Review")

"Fantastic! I honestly can't think of anything you have not put in there and
it reads like a who's who of the farmers' market industry. It is the
definitive guide for Farmers' Markets."

The Peterkin Papers
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Book Contractors (January, 2001)
Authors: Lucretia P. Hale and Flo Gibson
Average review score:

A Classic
Lucretia P Hale's, The Peterkin Papers is as wonderful today as I'm sure it was in 1880, when it was originally published. Meet the Peterkins, a nineteenth century family, totally lacking in common sense and enjoy their troubles and adventures as they muddle through life's challenges. For example, what do the Peterkins do when their daughter, Eliza Elizabeth's piano is delivered and set in front of the living room window backwards. They solve this problem by simply opening the window and she sits outside, on the porch playing and practicing. This is all fine during the summer, but when fall and winter arrive, it becomes too cold for her to sit out, even in her winter coat. Enter the lady from Philadelphia...she's so wise that she always has a quick solution to these tough Peterkin problems. "But why don't you turn the piano 'round?" And the Peterkins are always amazed that they didn't think of that. As Mrs Peterkins says, "What shall we do when the lady, from Philadelphia goes home again?" This is a delightful book of short chapters, each detailing a glich in the Peterkin's lives, that will charm and amuse your family, as it has families for many generations. The Peterkin Papers is an American classic and the perfect read-aloud book the whole family can share together.

One's education is lacking if you have not read this book
Ask the lady from Philadelphia -- a classic line -- one that is often quoted -- the book has been read by five generations in my family -- it is just as relevent today as when written

Great for reading aloud. Engineers will enjoy the humor.
The basic Peterkin formula: the Peterkins are stupid, yetlogical. They are completely devoid of common sense. Theyget into complicated situations and try to work their way out by adding complexity. Eventually they consult the wise old lady from Philadelphia, who always has a sensible, commonplace, wise, BORING answer. The stories are also an unforgettable picture of daily life in what seems to be a suburb of Boston in the early nineteenth century, almost an Eastern version of "Little House on the Prairie." And somehow there is an impression of a _slightly_ dysfunctional family that manages to muddle through, through with warmth, affection, and mutual tolerance. Stories are just the right length for reading aloud. Anyone eight years old or older will appreciate the humor.

See With New Eyes: The True Beauty of God's Character
Published in Paperback by Pacific Press Publishing Association (March, 2000)
Author: Ty Gibson
Average review score:

New perspectives for tired eyes
A wonderful book. In particular, it deals with the questions of God's mercy and justice in a well-thought out manner. It presents the character of God in a very positive light, and offers a perspective on how to consider the judgment in a way which is consistent with how God's character is revealed in other contexts (at the cross, for example).

I would recommend this book as highly as possible.

A Must-Read for Those Seeking
This is truly an awesome book. It shares a picture of God's character that encourages a person to fall in love with Him. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is truly seeking to get a better picture of God.

A new light on the true character of the love of God.
This boook totally revolutionized my view of the love of God. It turned God into the God that He truely is on of love that would and did do all the He could to save my life; one that doesn't condemn or see you as a sinner, but sees you as you really are the purchase of the blood of His beloved son who is the manifestation of God's own love for us.

The Shadow Scrapbook
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (June, 1979)
Authors: Walter Brown, Gibson and Anthony Tollin
Average review score:

A real gem!
This book turned out to be so much more than I had hoped, containing information on all aspects of the Shadow. The book begins with Gibson's excellently written history of his writing of the shadow stories, has a list of Shadow novels, shows Shadow covers (many in color!), discusses the Shadow's agents, shows illustrations, and then has a never before published Shadow story: The Riddle of the Rangoon Ruby! Then the book covers the Shadow radio show, includes a list of all broadcasts, and has the scripts of two broadcasts (The Death House Rescue-1937, and the White Legion-1938). Then the Shadow movies are covered, and the Shadow comics; including a whole comic adventure entitled the Mystery of the Sealed Box. Finally there are notes on codes used by the Shadow, and various old-time Shadow merchandise.

See? Everything you could want! This is book is a real gem, and must have for any Shadow fan. I enjoyed Gibson's story of writing the Shadow beyond anything I could have imagined, and absolutely loved the Rangoon Ruby. I sincerely hope that they someday reissue this book.

The Sonnets
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (February, 1997)
Authors: William Shakespeare and Rex Gibson
Average review score:

Classic poetry
The sonnet is one of the more difficult-to-write forms of poetry, with very strict rules on rhyming and lines, and that makes Shakespeare's collection of sonnets all the more impressive. Shakespeare sprinkled his various plays with poetry and songs, but there is something of a different flavor to these works.

Titleless, identified only by numbers, these poems have vivid metaphors and imagery ("let not winter's ragged hand deface," "gold candles fix'd in heaven's air"). The tone of the poetry varies from one sonnet to the next; sometimes it focuses on old age, to love that "looks upon tempests and is not shaken," and simple expressions that can't really be interpreted any other way. Some of it is pretty well-known ("Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?/Thou art more lovely and more temperate") but most of them you won't have seen before.

Even if you're not normally a fan of poetry, the delicate touch of Shakespeare's words is worth checking into. Fantastic.

A great find - It's both volumes
This edition of the sonnets is one of the most important and the description on Amazon is misleading - It is actually both volumes 24 and 25 bound together so you get the complete set It's hard to find this book so it is a great find in this version

Beautiful Collection
Shakespeare's amazing Sonnets are compiled here in this wonderful volume, a great addition to anyone's bookshelf. If you love Shakespeare, then this is a must-have book.
